In King County in 2016, 14 percent of students were chronically absent. That means more than 317,000 students missed 10%, 18 days, or more of the school year and were at risk of falling behind.
Missing just 2 school days a month for any reason, whether the absence is excused or unexcused, translates into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing subjects and ninth-graders dropping out of high school.
Falling behind doesn’t have to mean failing. There are resources and support available in King County to help students get back on track.
